About This Location

Wigan, a Greater Manchester town, sits between Manchester and Liverpool, with Bolton to the northeast and Warrington to the south. Serving as the largest settlement in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, it has a population of 107,732, while the wider borough boasts 330,714 residents. Wigan has historical ties to Lancashire. During the Industrial Revolution, it thrived as a mill town and coal mining hub, boasting up to 1,000 pit shafts in the vicinity. However, coal mining ceased in the 20th century. Wigan Pier, famously featured in George Orwell’s book “The Road to Wigan Pier,” highlighted poor living conditions in the 1930s. Today, it’s a heritage center, and the DW Stadium hosts Wigan Athletic Football Club and Wigan Warriors Rugby League Football Club.
