We’re sure you probably already know about Google Maps.
If you don’t, then where have you been for the last 15 years?
It’s free to use, making using it a no-brainer for smaller operators and owner-drivers.
Plan your routes with post codes on a desktop or laptop computer and send the routes direct to your mobile devices. You can see live traffic updates and it will attempt to re-route you on to faster roads if it finds anything worthwhile. You can even set it to warns you of toll roads and set routes to avoid them where possible.
Some people think it has limited uses for delivery drivers, but it will allow you to include up to 8 (we think?) addresses for multi-stops,, although as far as we’re aware it will not automatically order the routes for fastest journey times – you’ll have to do that yourself.
Address Numbers
A great feature is that many areas now have the property numbers showing on the maps, so if you’re trying to locate a particular shop or house then it’s much easier to find where exactly that property is on a particular road – as we all know post codes can be fairly vague at times.
Street view
Another feature that is an absolute saviour at times, is the street view option. This is great for planning ahead as you can check out where a property is and look for any access issues. If you’re new to courier work you might not think this is important right now, but just wait – it can be a regular problem with some roads in the UK. Don’t leave it till you’re 50 yards away from a junction to find out there’s a bus-only access, or a height restriction.
For anyone starting out this should be on your favourites bar and your phone.
